Hiking & Camping

Between the High Peaks, remote lakes and streams, incredible vistas, and dense forests, the Adirondacks are full of places that can only be discovered on foot. Whether it’s your first hike or 500th, we’ll help get you out there and learn a thing or two. And there’s simply nothing like a day or night spent out in the Adirondack wilderness to get reacquainted with your wild side.

High Peaks Hikes

The High Peaks are the crown jewels of Adirondack hiking, reaching the highest points in New York State. We’ve been exploring the peaks for years, honing in the most efficient and scenic ways to reach their remote summits. If you’re getting started on your 46er journey (or just want to see what it’s all about), we can guide you up some of the introductory peaks (e.g. Cascade, Porter, Phelps, Tabletop) to help you dial in your systems and solidify your skills. Or if you’re ready to tackle the “trailless” and remote peaks — like the Seward Range, Allen, or Cliff and Redfield — we’ve got your back, providing security and companionship when you’re way out in the backcountry.

Day Hikes

Hiking in the ADK doesn’t have to be a grueling experience. There are endless trails that reach scenic views overlooking the vast forests that can be hiked without the thousands of feet of elevation gain that some of the High Peaks require. Our day hikes include waterfall tours, excursions to the gorgeous remote lakes, or ridge walks where you pop out of the trees. Tell us about what you want to get out of the experience and we’ll match you with the perfect hike!

Family Hikes

Experience the beauty of the Adirondacks on a family hike that combines adventure, education, and breathtaking scenery! Join us for a memorable day exploring serene trails, lush forests, and stunning mountain views tailored for all ages and skill levels. Our friendly, professional guides will share their knowledge of local wildlife, plants, and the rich history of the region as we navigate the trails together. We can do scavenger hunts, sing camp songs, and stop along the way to dip our toes in the crystal-clear water flowing from mountain summits. Enjoy quality family time surrounded by nature, while creating lasting memories full of wide-eyed wonder.

And don’t forget, dogs are part of the family, too! We can set you up with a great dog-friendly hike so the whole family can come. 🐾

Sunrise & Sunset Hikes

Take in the breathtaking beauty of the Adirondacks with easy-access sunrise and sunset hikes perfect for couples and families. As the first light of dawn or the warm hues of dusk envelop the mountains and lakes, these short trails offer stunning views without demanding a strenuous trek. Start your day with the tranquil glow of sunrise over the Saranac Lakes, or wind down in the evening as the setting sun casts a magical palette across the High Peaks. With hand-picked locations with remarkable views, you can create lasting memories while immersing yourself in nature's artistry. Let the serenity of the outdoors elevate your day, whether you're hand-in-hand with a loved one or exploring with the whole family.

Backpacking

Embarking on a guided backpacking trip through the Adirondacks is an unforgettable adventure that allows you to explore multiple peaks and experience the majestic beauty of this stunning landscape — all self-supported and human-powered. With an expert guide by your side, you can navigate the challenging trails of classic routes like the High Peaks or the beautiful Northville-Placid Trail. As you make your way through lush forests, over rocky summits, and alongside serene lakes, you'll be immersed in the sights and sounds of nature while gaining a deeper appreciation for this remarkable wilderness. Each day brings new challenges and breathtaking vistas, creating lasting memories and a sense of accomplishment as you conquer each peak along the way. A backpacking journey promises not only to enhance your hiking skills but also to connect you with the spirit of the Adirondacks.

Camping

Camping in the Adirondacks offers the perfect opportunity for families or new campers seeking a full outdoor experience without the need for extensive hikes. Our guide will select an easy-access campsite, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature without the usual strenuous trek. You'll learn essential camping skills, including how to set up your camp efficiently, cook delicious meals in the backcountry, and create a cozy environment for a restful night's sleep. Whether you're roasting marshmallows around the campfire or stargazing at night, this adventure promises to foster lasting memories in the beautiful wilderness of the Adirondack Park. Reservation Policy

The Request a Guide form indicates your interest in booking a trip with us and gives us enough info to start building a trip plan, but it doesn’t guarantee a spot will be available. We’ll get back to you as promptly as we can to let you know if your trip on your preferred date is available.

After your itinerary has been set, Onward Mountain Guides will send an invoice for payment. The deposit is due upon receipt of the invoice, and payment of the remaining balance is due 7 days ahead of the start of your trip.

Trip requests are not considered booked, and the dates are not reserved for you, until the deposit has been paid.

Cancelation Policy

If a trip is canceled, at the guide’s discretion, due to weather or unfavorable conditions, a full refund will be issued.

If you cancel, for any reason, a refund or credit will be issued according to the following conditions:

  • Cancelations made 8 or more days out from the start of the trip will receive a full refund, including the deposit.

  • Cancelations made within 7 days of the start of the trip will forfeit the deposit.

I’ve done my best to make this respectful and fair. When you book your trip, I commit to it for my schedule, spend time preparing, and count on that income. Last-minute changes are disruptive, and I’m unlikely to be able to rebook your day with someone else.
